Price: US $11,500.00 SOLD OUT
Beetle which has been in our family in Los Angeles since I was a child. She has 89,616 verifiable original miles. She was gifted to me nearly 25 years ago when I was in my 30's and saw little use over the next decade -- as I was focused on the restoration of my 1968 Mustang California Special. Unfortunately, I have the recognition as being the first and only person to ever put a dent in the car, having misjudging a grape stake fencepost while backing out of the driveway in 1990. When in my 40's, my father was looking for a retirement project at his new home on the Central Coast of California -- and expressed an interest in restoring the car to its former glory. The body was disassembled,"Bob's fender" hammered and dollied, and the whole body block sanded down to original paint. The body components were then painted separately with urethane, then color sanded and buffed, matching again the beautiful original-to-us yellow color -- with a stunning finish. Everything was replaced as best as possible with NOS and OEM parts. Dad entered her in a Volkswagen Owners Club in the "1968 and Later Type I" category and won first place, after which she again saw little use outside of an occasional parade. She's logged about 5000 miles since her 2001 ground-up restoration. She is all but indistinguishable from brand new - both inside and out and was restored at a time when OEM parts were available and the few necessary aftermarket parts were of higher quality than most today. Dad's restoration is a true labor of love -- documented to the finest detail with spreadsheets and all original receipts in a detailed color portfolio which will be provided with the car. I put a small chip in the front hood from attempting to open the hood with the windshield wipers extended and another from a misadjusted drivers side mirror. The original touch-up paint jar has dried up..it will need a pint of touch-up custom-matched by an auto paint supply outfit. The paint is otherwise perfect. I will mention that this is not a car for the person who does not enjoy sharing stories everywhere they go and listening to those of others (who invariably wish they still had their Volkswagen). Much of the draw is the unique color -- which is very warm, friendly and inviting. The color is not stock but it is an exact match for the color it was when Dad bought it in the 1970's. It was always the perfect color. The matching sunny yellow dashboard is very soothing. It's truly a "Happy Car"! I'm not just selling her, I want to do my part in continuing her legacy into the next 50 years of enjoyment. I will attempt a little each day of the auction to answer questions for those interested and provide detail shots and specifics of this gorgeous restoration. In the meantime, feel free to call me, Bob Rall, at 760-945-3321 in Carlsbad California with any questions....I'll be happy to share. Ideally I will be able to sell her locally where I can enjoy seeing her now and then, but I will consider personally taking her for her last drive to anywhere between San Diego and San Francisco - and will give consideration to your shipping arrangements. I am reserving the right to remove this listing at any time to sell locally. Thanks for reading...and good luck. Best, Bob P.S. I had difficulty capturing the warmth of the color in the photos. The color is warm and soothing - not bright and saturated as it appears in some photos. I'll post some detail photos in the next few days (if it ever stops raining !)
