1972 Fiat 500 with Subaru EA81 4 Cylinder SwapYes, you heard it right, Subaru engine swap. Forget the weak and fragile 18hp air cooled two cylinder, this has an 1800cc water cooled flat four. Forget about not being able to get on the highway, or having to get out and push when going up hill, you'll be pulling away from everyone effortlessly at the traffic light. It's fun to see people faces as they get passed by the old tiny 500!After breaking the stock engine multiple times, and tired of being dangerously slow, a search for a swap began. I selected the EA81 since there was already a few swaps done by Zcars of the UK, and they made an adapter kit. The EA81 fits in perfectly, just look at it! It is like it was meant to be.The adapter kit and shipping alone are about $2000. That's $2000 for just the adapter, no engine. Google Zcars UK to read more about them.Read up on the Subaru EA81, and you will see they are bullet proof and used in light air craft and gyro-copters. They are rated 73 bhp and 94 lb. ft of torque stock. This one probably makes a bit more due to no emissions control, Weber carb and a free flowing exhaust.This car has so much torque it renders first gear useless. I always start in 2nd gear. Along with the new $1500 synchronized transmission, I had a 5 speed conversion kit $1320 and shift gate $230 installed. There is a lot of time, money and expertise put into this project.
