1964 Toyota Land Cruiser. DIESEL 4X4Toyota Bandeirante was initially assembled in Brazil, initially still under the name Land Cruiser FJ-251 (Series J5), from January 23, 1958.Thus, the Brazilian Land Cruiser became the J5 series, in contrast to the Japanese J4 series. But the J5 series that designates the Brazilian Land Cruiser cannot be confused with the J5 series of the Japanese Land Cruiser, a Station Wagon (long van with four doors that in the 60s was produced mainly for the North American market, where it obtained a considerable success). The manufacture of Bandeirante in Brazil was nationalized in May 1962.[1] Production only ended in November 2001.[2] During this period, the longest that the same car model had been produced in Brazil, 103,750 units were assembled, which rises to 104,621 if the Land Cruisers mounted on CKD are added.[1][3]It is known for its robustness and ability to move in unfavorable terrain for passenger cars.[1] From 1958 to 1962, it was powered by Toyota's 2F engine, a 4.0 low-speed, 6-cylinder gasoline engine that developed 110 hp at 2000 rpm. It was soon seen, however, that this engine's gluttony for gasoline reduced the vehicle's reach excessively, making it unfeasible for the Brazilian interior of those years. Thus, with the nationalization of manufacturing in 1962, the model was renamed Toyota Bandeirante and equipped with the OM-324 engine (some sources claim the engine was an OM-326) from Mercedes-Benz, a 3.4 diesel with four cylinders that developed 78 hp at 3000 rpm and that earned the vehicle the nickname of "Crush Machine". In 1973, the OM-324 was followed by the OM-314, also from Mercedes-Benz. The OM-314 is a 3.8 four-cylinder diesel that develops 85 hp at 2,800 rpm. That engine would stay until 1990, the year it was replaced by another Mercedes-Benz engine, the OM-364. The OM-364 is a 4.0 diesel, whose power is 90 hp at 2800 rpm. It was because of the Mercedes-Benz OM (Öl Motor) engines that the Bandeirante line from 1962 to 1994 would be called the OJ5 series. The year of 1994 would mark the end of the Mercedes-Benz engines: that year, the Bandeirante started to be equipped with the Toyota 14B propeller, a 3.7 with four cylinders, always diesel, which reaches 96 hp at 3,400 rpm.
